Fiji Cyclone Claims First Victim
Publicado - Published: 15/03/2010

FIJI (Ana Tudrau-Tamani / AHN).- Tropical Cyclone Tomas has claimed its first victim even before it has hit the Fiji Islands group.

Police confirm that a 31-year-old woman died on a beach in Vanua Levu, Fiji's north, after she was washed out to sea by huge waves.

Tamarisi Tabua was removing bandages from her circumcised grandson at Namilamila Bay in the province of Cakaudrove when she, her three daughters and two grandchildren were swallowed by huge waves and swept to sea.

Police spokesman Atunaisa Sokomuri said the woman did not make it to shore after she managed to save one of her grandchildren.

Police have again cautioned the public to take heed of warnings especially since the country is under a cyclone alert.
